This spring East Lothian Council will hold its first East Lothian Youth Summit.

Held as part of the Year of Young People, the event will engage young leaders in shaping the Education Service Improvement Plan 2018-2019, which will assist in delivering on its commitment to “believe, achieve, and strive for excellence and care for all”.

Entitled “Ideas for change, ideas for action”, this key event hosted by the Education service will invite two young East Lothian to attend. Young delegates will listen to speakers including Bruce Adamson, Children and Young People’s Commissioner and James Dornan MSP, Education and Skills Committee Convenor, and will work in groups addressing key questions which relate to the Student Evaluation of Experience Survey (SEE Survey) that is carried out every year in East Lothian schools. Local MSP Iain Gray will also be attending and listening to the views of young people. The event aims to hear directly from young people about their experiences and ideas, particularly in relation to their learning, and it is hoped that this will become a bi-annual event.

Key questions and themes that the young delegates will be invited to discuss include:

  • What life skills are useful for you and your peers?
  • How can your school help you make healthy lifestyle choices?
  • Is there anything that your school could help you learn that is not currently part of your learning?

Cllr Shamin Akhtar, Cabinet Spokesperson for Education and Children’s Services, who will be speaking at the summit, said:

“I’m really looking forward to our first youth summit that will be involve, include and engage young people in how to improve our Education Service. Who best to ask how to do this than the children and young people themselves? I’m sure this will be a really inspiring event and I look forward to hearing what the young people have to say.”

The Youth Summit will be held on Wednesday 7 March at The Brunton in Musselburgh.
