Seaside town receives new CCTV system

CCTV cameras have gone live in North Berwick using a joint investment from East Lothian Council and the local community.

North Berwick Community Council was keen to see the council's network expand into the town to alleviate concerns about late night antisocial behaviour and dedicated £50,000 towards achieving this aim. The council included the cameras as part of its £400,000 programme of works to expand the network across the county. This meant that the town has benefited from three additional cameras, as opposed to the single unit that the community council's investment would have covered. It also means that monitoring and maintenance will be carried out by the council.

Four cameras have been installed at a number of locations in the town. The locations were chosen after extensive consultation with the local community and police. Each camera can rotate 360 degrees and zoom to capture high quality images that can be used as evidence in police investigations.

East Lothian Council's Deputy Leader Cllr Stuart MacKinnon commented:

"North Berwick has campaigned to have CCTV cameras in the town and even set-aside funding towards it. However, one camera alone would not have had the positive impact that they hoped. By working together in this way we've been able to share the costs of installing a high quality CCTV network that will be properly monitored and bring all of the benefits the community council originally anticipated."

Mrs Pat Burton, Chairman of North Berwick Community Council commented:

"The introduction of the four CCTV cameras marks the first phase. Several more cameras are proposed for the town in locations where antisocial behaviour and vandalism has been experienced, making the town centre a safer place for our community. We hope to extend CCTV coverage as funds allow."
