Planning and building control

Planning and Building Standards

Planning & Building Standards is a Division of the Environment Department and consists of Building Standards, Development Control and Policy and Projects.  See below for a brief detail of what each section does.

Planning Online

View or submit planning applications, or make a representation against a planning application online.

Development Control

Decisions on the particular changes that people want to their land or buildings are taken by the Council, as Planning Authority, through the Development Control process. That involves the determination of applications for Planning Permission, Listed Building Consent, Conservation Area Consent and Advertisement Consent.

Building Standards

If you intend to erect, extend, alter, convert or demolish a building in East Lothian you will more than likely need to apply to Building Standards for a Building Warrant.  Once your plans are approved we will inspect the works on site to enable the acceptance of a Completion Certificate.

Policy and Projects

The Council's attitude towards the location and kinds of new development, including changes in the use of land and buildings, is set out in the planning policies and proposals of the Development Plan. All applications for planning permission are assessed against its terms.

New Planning Act

Scotland's planning system is currently undergoing modernisation.  Further details are available at the Scottish Government website.
