Safer Food - Safer Work - Safer Living!
Whether at work, shopping or enjoying leisure time we are committed to trying to ensure that the public can safely live their lives to the full.
The Council's Food & Safety Team is responsible for inspecting more than 1000 registered local food businesses in terms of the Food Safety Act 1990, paying particular attention to areas such as cleanliness, practices and temperature control as well as the composition and labelling of the food itself.
As well as carrying out the routine visits to these premises, the Food and Safety Team investigates complaints from the public whether concerning food hygiene matters, food standards matters or health and safety matters.
We carry out routine sampling of food sold and produced throughout East Lothian, as well as sampling both public and private water supplies to ensure all current health standards are met. Swimming pool and spa waters are also tested to ensure adequate treatment is carried out to protect public health. Food and water related illnesses reported by Lothian Health are also investigated.
Food Hygiene Information System
The Food Hygiene Information Scheme within East Lothian is designed to give information about how well each food outlet complied with the legislation at its last food hygiene inspection carried out by officers from the Council's Food and Safety section. The scheme will be introduced progressively over the next two years commencing in North Berwick.
CookSafe and RetailSafe
Food Standards Agency Scotland has designed a scheme called 'CookSafe' to help catering businesses understand and implement a Food Safety Management System.
The RetailSafe system has been designed for retailers handling unwrapped high-risk foods.
