Ageing Well
Ageing Well in East Lothian
Ageing Well UK is a health promotion initiative run through Age Concern for the over 50s which aims to help them take control of their own health.
Established in 1993, there are now over 100 projects running nationwide. The East Lothian project is one of five in Lothian, all of which are run in partnership with NHS Lothian.
The East Lothian project aims: 'To improve and maintain the health of older people and improve their quality of life through increasing their physical activity levels, increasing their access to leisure facilities and promoting the development of a locality wide multi-agency programme, based on Ageing Well principles'.
We are community-based and take a broad approach to encouraging activity by involving a wide range of organisations and groups.
We recruit, train and support volunteers who will then endeavour to:
- direct individuals to existing, appropriate activities in the community and encourage participation in these
- work with health professionals and others to identify older people who are frail/housebound and not currently participating in any regular physical activity
- work with clients who have physical disabilities, mental health needs or dementia and possibly "buddy" people to appropriate health-related services
- provide advice and training on physical activity-related topics to organisations and groups working with older people
- raise awareness of the project and the benefits of increased physical activity
- support the work of Ageing Well
