Fairtrade in East Lothian

Fairtrade Status

Skip to pages in this document

Fairtrade logoThe East Lothian Fairtrade Network aims to promote awareness of fair trade in East Lothian and aims to achieve Fairtrade Zone Status for East Lothian.  BUT we need your help!

So far Longniddry is a Fairtrade village and North Berwick is a Fairtrade Town but we need your help to get your village or town Fairtrade status.  There are lots of schools and churches in East Lothian already promoting Fairtrade and we just need you to bring it together to achieve our goal.

It is very simple to achieve Fairtrade status all you need to do is meet the following 5 goals:

  • The local Council must pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade and serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings (the Council has already done this)
  • A range of Fairtrade products must be readily available at the areas' shops and served in local cafes and catering establishments (relative to population size)
  • Fairtrade products must be used by a number of local workplaces (e.g. hairdressers) and community groups (e.g. schools and churches)
  • The local Council must attract popular support for the campaign
  • A local Fairtrade Steering Group must be convened to ensure a continued commitment to Fairtrade
