A unique, award winning museum dedicated to the life of John Muir
John Muir’s life and work has inspired people all over the world. Discover how the boy born in this house became one of the driving forces behind the global conservation movement.
Our absorbing hands-on interpretation centre will take you on a journey through John Muir’s life as a pioneering conservationist, explorer, writer, geologist and inventor. Our friendly, well informed staff are always on hand to help and answer questions.
The building is fully accessible with three floors of family friendly interactive displays complemented by a lively exhibition and events programme and a shop offering books and gifts for all ages.
We welcome group visits and would be delighted to discuss your requirements with you.
The Museum is free to enter although there may be a small charge for some events and activities.
If you are here for the day there is a good selection of places to eat and drink with something to offer every taste within a short walk.
- April to September: 10am-5pm Monday-Saturday, 1pm-5pm Sunday
- October to March: 10am-5pm Wednesday-Saturday, 1pm-5pm Sunday

How to Find Us
By BUS - Regular bus services run throughout the year to and from Edinburgh City Centre, Berwick-upon-Tweed and North Berwick. All stop within easy reach. For timetables see www.firstgroup.com, www.perrymansbuses.co.uk and www.eveinfo.co.uk
By CAR - John Muir's Birthplace is signposted off the A1 from the north and south and can be found towards the north end of the High Street. There is free parking available on the High Street for 1 hour or at the Splash Leisure Pool signposted just off the north end of the High Street. Coach parking is also available at the Leisure Pool car park. Electric car charging points are available at the Bleachingfield Car Park and on Spott Road between ADSA and Dunbar Garden Centre.
