Marriage Registration

Giving Notice of Marriage in Scotland

Please note that the minimum period of marriage notice in Scotland is 29 days before the date of the marriage.

When you are planning your marriage, you are required to give notice to the Registrar of your intention to be married. To do this you will each need to complete a Marriage Notice Form which you can lodge with the Registrar. You should contact the office and make an appointment to come into the office as you will need to bring original documents along with your forms. However, if you are unable to attend the office then paperwork could also be posted to us. Find your nearest office.

You are required to give notice of your intention to marry at least 29 days prior to the marriage taking place.  It is recommended that you submit your Marriage Notice Form as early as 10-12 weeks prior to your wedding date. The Registrar is unable to accept Marriage Notice Forms more than 3 months prior to the date of your marriage.

The Registration Service is committed to giving you the kind of ceremony you want and are happy to include your own words and readings as part of the ceremony on your very special day.

You can also incorporate simple and meaningful additions like the ancient custom of Hand Fasting or the Blending of the Sands or the Exchange of a Single Red Rose into your ceremony. Please ask the registrar for more information and details regarding the ceremony when you make your booking.

The Registrar can carry out the ceremony at a venue of your choice and agreed with the local authority.

A Marriage Notice Form is also required for religious or other belief system marriages and again an appointment should be made with the Registrar when submitting your marriage notice forms.

If you are a non-EEA National see information later in this section.

Marrying Abroad

You may also need to give notice here if you plan to marry abroad. Ask the overseas authority if you’ll need a ‘certificate of no impediment’.
