The Trust provides grants to individuals to help with studies or projects of an educational nature including:

  • courses at colleges and universities
  • travel scholarships
  • apprenticeships & practical experience of trades
  • research grants

To apply for a grant you must be a resident of the old county of East Lothian, as it existed when the Trust was set up in 1957. This means that residents of Musselburgh, Wallyford and Whitecraig are not able to apply.

There is no age restriction for applications.

Grants are designed to provide supplementary support to individuals. They are not intended to be an individual's main source of income.

You can apply for a grant to cover the following types of expenditure:

  • course fees
  • accommodation
  • travel expenses
  • books and materials
  • living expenses
  • specialised equipment

Grants are also available to clubs and organisations in the area for a variety of educational purposes. These may include equipment, travel costs, or specific trips and projects.

The Trust is run by a Board of Governors which usually meets in February, May, August and November each year. Applications for grants are considered by the governors at these meetings.
