Arts education

The arts have a positive impact on learning; they can raise children's self confidence and self esteem and play a key role in their personal and social development.

Our Arts Education Officer and Cultural Coordinators work in partnership with East Lothian schools to create, facilitate and promote learning opportunities for pupils through arts and culture.

We offer a wide variety of art, craft, drama, dance or music based activities, projects and performances, which also support the aims of the Curriculum For Excellence.

Arts Service drama teachers lead drama projects in schools for all age groups, and an Arts Service dance artist teaches dance both during and outwith school hours.

Activities are also offered through Brunton Theatre's education and outreach programme.

East Lothian Council Arts Service recently supported a Music and Emotional Literacy pilot project at Ross High school. The evaluation report into the project examines and assesses the effectiveness of using music to teach emotional literacy skills to a group of 12/13 year old pupils over the course of 2 school terms, through independent monitoring and evaluation. You can download the Evaluation report here.

For more information, you can read our arts education brochure. You will find it, along with an arts education projects booking form, in the Downloads section at the bottom of this page.
