A Great Variety of Landscapes

East Lothian offers a great variety of landscapes for walking, cycling and horse riding, with the Lammermuir Hills to the south, a coastline of broad sandy beaches and rugged cliffs to the north and east, and an expanse of arable farmland, woods and rivers in between.

With the passing of the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, people have a greater right to access the outdoors, by foot, bicycle, horse and canoe, provided they do so responsibly. If you're not sure what 'responsible' means, consider the impact of your activity and be aware that an activity may be responsible at a certain time of the year and not another.

For example riding down a narrow muddy path in winter is liable to make the condition of the route far worse, whereas the path may be ok to use in summer.

A full explanation of your Rights and Responsibilities is available via the Quick Links on the right. The Outdoor Access Officers have been working with local communities and landowners to create a network of paths that provide a great opportunity to explore the county.

For all enquiries relating to access, please contact outdooraccess@eastlothian.gov.uk or telephone 01620 827671 / 01620 827419
