Covid-19 and births, marriages, civil partnerships and funerals

We are now able to process certificates. Requests for certificates can be made online.

We have resumed birth registrations.

If your child was born in Scotland and you wish to register in East Lothian please contact the Registrar’s Office to make an appointment to begin the process of registering your baby’s birth: call 01620 827 308 or email Include your contact phone number and the Registrar will call you back with details of the registration process.

During the process: if the child’s parents are married to each other: only one parent needs to speak to the Registrar, or if the child’s parents are not married to each other: both parents need to join the call to speak to the Registrar.

You will also be required to attend the office at the John Gray Centre, Haddington at a later date to sign the birth register. If the child’s parents are married to each other, then only one parent needs to attend. If the child’s parents are not married to each other, then both parents will need to attend. The Registrar’s office at Musselburgh is currently closed.

Civil marriages

Due to staffing challenges our Registration team were focusing on statutory services such as the registration of births and deaths and support for burials. However, from Monday 17 January 2022 you will be able to book your civil marriage with the Registrar’s office. To make a booking email the Registration Service or call 01620 827308.  All current Scottish Government guidelines will apply to any ceremony.

Civil ceremonies due to be held within the registration office can currently only be held at The Brunton Hall, Musselburgh or Dunbar Town House.

Tell us once

Tell Us Once is a service that lets you report a death to most government organisations in one go. Read full details on government website.

If you have had a bereavement or stillbirth the certifying doctor will email the Medical Certificate Cause of Death or Still Birth along with your contact details to the registration service of your choice.  A member of the team will call you back, which could take a few days. The information will be taken over the phone and an arrangement made to send any certificates to you.

All Registration business is currently being carried out from the Haddington Registrar’s Office, John Gray Centre or by staff working from home.  Musselburgh Registrar’s Office remains closed for business. Death registrations will be conducted by telephone and email during the pandemic. For an appointment to register a death please call 01620 827308 or email

For all burial administration please call 01620 827650 or email

Those who are organising a funeral are advised that in-person attendance at funeral services should continue to be kept to a small number of people where possible and will be subject to physical distancing and wider public health measures. In person attendance at a funeral service should be limited to 50 people. Details for the Scottish Government’s Test and Protect should be submitted at the time of arranging the funeral.

This is to help prevent and mitigate any potential spread of the virus amongst different households and the wider community.

Wherever possible and if available, those wishing to attend or follow a funeral service should do so by electronic means, such as via an online streaming service or by viewing a recording of the service.

Immediate family include:

  • partner / spouse of the deceased
  • children and their partners of the deceased
  • parents or carers of the deceased
  • brothers and sisters of the deceased.

Your co-operation is appreciated at this difficult time.
