Moving on or deferring entry to primary school

Allocation of places in Primary 1

Placement in a primary school is based on home address, so pupils who attend the nursery of a school which is not in their catchment area are not guaranteed a Primary1 place in the same school.

Deferring entry to primary school

Traditionally in Scotland almost all children start primary school aged between 4 and a half and 5 years old.

For session 2026/27, children who have not had their 5th birthday by the date school starts on 12 August 2026 are entitled to another year of funded Early Learning and Childcare.  This is available to children who turn 5 years of age from 13 August 2026 to 28 February 2027.

The application link has now closed.  Late applications will be considered, but you should be aware that a place may no longer be available in your child's current or chosen nursery setting as places for August 2026 will have been allocated.

If you wish to make a late application, email nams@eastlothian.gov.uk

Applications received by the closing date of 12 January 2026 will receive confirmation of their request to defer by email in February 2026. Applications submitted after the closing date will not receive confirmation until April/May 2026.
