Star Awards 2017

We are launching our tenth annual East Lothian Council Star Awards ceremony. The awards identify and reward excellence, inspiring practitioners and benefiting the public. Every year the number of nominations for each category from council staff and members of the public has grown. There are two constants – the pride and sense of achievement felt by the winners and shortlisted entrants and the rigour with which the entries are judged. Our awards reward effectiveness and excellence across all areas of our business and celebrate high quality service, creativity and innovation.

Individual and Team Customer Excellence Awards

These awards recognise and honour outstanding customer service professionals and highlight their vital importance in providing an excellent experience for our customers. We are looking for that person and that team that regularly goes the extra mile and demonstrates real pride in their work. These are people who aren’t afraid to be flexible and look for new ways to resolve issues for their customers. They could also be active in training or mentoring their colleagues. They build good working relationships within their team and work in partnership with colleagues across East Lothian Council. They always put themselves in their customer’s shoes and contribute to driving forward customer service excellence. They show grace under fire, are calm, diplomatic, good at setting clear service expectations and provide consistent and accurate information to their customers.

The Unsung Heroes Award

Unsung Heroes are people or teams that support the rest of us to do our jobs well on a regular basis over the course of years. They are usually quiet, retiring and shy about taking any credit for themselves but we all know that we wouldn’t be able to what we do nearly so well without their help. They make an outstanding contribution to the work of their team or other people they support. They can also be people who make an outstanding contribution to the local community or a charity but look for no personal recognition. We all know someone or a team that deserves this award – make sure you nominate them this year so at long last they can enjoy their place in the sun!

Services to our Communities Award

Do you know a person or team that is really good at building great relationships with other organisations or people to develop our communities? The winner or winners of this award help others to achieve economic or community growth. They really believe in growing our economy and growing our people and they are able to build strong partnerships and motivate groups or businesses to recognise East Lothian’s potential. Their work will have had tangible results in securing improvements for communities or our local economy. So many people and teams across the council play a key role in this area – make sure they get the recognition they deserve.

Services to our People Award

Our services can make a really positive difference to people’s lives. This can be by helping people to get the best out of their lives now or helping them to secure a better future for themselves. This award celebrates a person or team that has helped others to achieve personal growth and attainment – this can be by providing care and support or by making a contribution to a project that has demonstrably improved services for our people.

One Council Award

Do you know an individual or a team who have really embraced the One Council ethos? Working seamlessly with other departments on a project that will have or has had a direct benefit to our customers? A person or team who has broken down some of the traditional ‘barriers’ so that council teams are no longer working in isolation but sharing knowledge and skills on a daily basis to make a difference? Make sure you nominate them so that we can all follow their example in our daily working lives!

Community Partner Award

This award is designed to recognise a person or organisation who works in the community, with the council, to improve joint working and make a real difference to the lives of our customers. It could be a council colleague who volunteers or works really well with an organisation in our local communities. Or it could be the organisation themselves, who you want to recognise for the collaborative way they work with the council. Or a person working really well within a community organisation. This can include the NHS, who we’re obviously working closely with under the new Integrated Health and Social Care arrangements. We’re looking for a local hero!

Provost’s Award

Our Provost will look closely at the nominees for all the awards and pick out the one person or team who he, personally, thinks has made an outstanding contribution to the work of the council or really made a difference to our communities. A truly special award.

Team of the Year Award, Young Council Worker of the Year and Council Worker of the Year Award

At the judges’ discretion, these three awards will be presented to the young person (age up to 25), individuals or teams whose contribution to customer service, team work and to the One Council approach has been truly outstanding. You can nominate directly to these categories. But the judges may also select nominees to other categories if they feel their contribution merits one of these special awards.

East Lothian Courier Award

As voted for by readers of the East Lothian Courier, our media partner once again for this year’s Star Awards, the East Lothian Courier Award will go to an individual or team nominated by members of the public who have experienced excellent customer service first hand, and have been so impressed they have taken the time to nominate those who have gone that extra mile to impress, dazzle and inspire!
