An amber warning for snow is in place for East Lothian, with very low temperatures.

Residents should be aware that this has the potential for local disruption and we will continue to monitor conditions.

All East Lothian Council primary and secondary schools, as well as local authority nurseries and specialist provision, will be CLOSED today (Wednesday), due to the conditions.

Our four Recycling Centres at Kinwegar, Macmerry, North Berwick and Dunbar will close today at 2pm. This follows the Met Office issuing a Red Warning for snow . This decision is in the health and safety interests of users and staff.

Travel disruption is possible. Rural communities may be particularly affected.

Residents should be prepared for potential power cuts and disruption to other services including mobile phones. Think carefully about any journeys, plan your route and check forecasts.

East Lothian Council is prepared to deal with adverse weather, with teams having been out overnight treating our priority roads and again early in the morning, backed up by Amenity Services teams treating priority pedestrian routes.

The council is also working with partners to ensure our most vulnerable residents receive the care and support they need in the event of severe weather, including people in care homes or those receiving care at home.

For more information on East Lothian Council’s gritting priorities, visit our winter weather page.

For weather updates, listen to local radio stations or visit the Met Office website.

This page also gives advice and links to further information on preparing at home for winter weather for example leaving your heating on to avoid burst pipes and how to prepare if you need to make a journey.

The Scottish Government’s Ready Scotland campaign has useful information for householders on preparing for adverse weather.

Their advice includes:

  • Have a grit and shovel ready to clear your paths
  • Check your pipes are insulated and know how to turn your water off
  • Keep a supply of essential food and bottled water for your family and pets
  • Think about a friend or neighbour who may need extra help
  • If you have to travel, give yourself extra time, take a winter car kit and warm clothes
  • For long journeys, pack food, water and medication
