Some local libraries will see extended opening hours and others will slightly decrease

Some East Lothian libraries will have a change to their opening hours following a review of usage of branches across the county. Some libraries will see a slight decrease in the hours that they are open whilst others will see a slight increase.

A council spokeperson said: “These changes follow a review of usage at all of our libraries carried out in consultation with our library staff and provide opportunities to direct our resources to meet areas of higher demand.”

“In recent years, East Lothian Council has substantially increased the opening hours of libraries. In 2011, East Lothian libraries were open 352 hours per week  whereas today they are open 399 hours per week. Library opening hours have increased because of the investment the council has made over the past decade in building and refurbishing facilities, and by creating a joint library and customer service team.  East Lothian is managing to sustain library services at a time when demand on essential council resources is increasing whilst budgets are not and other local authorities across the UK are reducing library opening hours significantly.”

In the past year North Berwick, Haddington, Dunbar and Tranent libraries have all had a slight decrease in opening hours with Ormiston and Prestonpans having a slight increase.

Wallyford library is now open on Wednesday mornings when school classes can visit, instead of Saturdays mornings which had been very quiet.  These changes are in preparation for the new library which will open in the new Wallyford Primary school building in spring 2019.

The changes will apply from 4 June:

  • Port Seton Library will close at 6pm on Thursday evenings (currently 7.30pm) and will not be open on Saturday mornings (currently open 10am – 1pm)
  • Musselburgh Library will be open all day on Wednesdays until 5pm  (currently open 10am – 1pm)
  • Longniddry Library will open on Wednesdays 10am – 1pm (to accommodate school class visits) and from 2 pm – 6 pm (currently open on Wednesdays from 2 pm – 7.30 pm)
  • Prestonpans Library will close at 5pm on Mondays (currently open until 7pm)
