New scheme offers carers discounts and treats as mark of appreciation during National Carers Week.
At the beginning of May, East Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership wrote out to businesses in East Lothian to ask if they would be able to take part in an East Lothian Carers’ Card during National Carers’ Week 2018 (11-17 June). There are around 12,000 carers that we know of in East Lothian who provide unpaid care for partners, parents, siblings, extended family or friends. They range from really young children to much older people.
The East Lothian Carer Card scheme offers carers a discount, a treat or some other mark of appreciation during National Carers Week. It might just be a free cup of coffee, but it shows carers how much they are valued for their skills, dedication and, most of all, willingness to put others’ needs before their own day in, day out.
So far, around 20 businesses have signed up, including the Paula McDonald Beauty Room, Ravelston House, Dunmuir Hotel, Archerfield Walled Garden, John Muir Café, Sara Slater Bowen, East Links Family Park. Mason-Chadburn, Reboot Disc Golf, Scottish Seabird Centre, Cranio Sacral Scotland, McKenzie Massage Therapy, Brunton Bistro, enjoyleisure and the Brunton Theatre.
Carers can pick up their Carers’ Cards from agencies such as Carers of East Lothian, East Lothian Council Social Care teams and East Lothian Young Carers. Carers will be given a list of what’s on offer and how to access it. The information will also be online.
Health and social care spokesperson Councillor Fiona O’Donnell says:
‘We have had a fantastic response so far, including offers of free cakes and coffees, big discounts on dining out, days out, visits, taster sessions, discounted massage and other therapies.
‘I’d also like to thank all the businesses and organisations who have been so generous in their support of the East Lothian Carers Card – I know your contributions will be very much appreciated. It’s wonderful that you have taken this opportunity to celebrate East Lothian’s carers and give them something back just for themselves.’
