Birth, death, marriage and civil partnership certificates
If the birth, death or marriage was registered in East Lothian since 1855, or if the civil partnership was registered in East Lothian since 2005, you may obtain a certificate through the East Lothian Registration Service.
It may also be possible to obtain a certificate for an event registered anywhere in Scotland (between 1855-to year preceding current year).
You can request a copy of a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership certificate:
- Online - through our online payment system - Select "Copies of Birth Certificate etc" from the list, then select "Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Civil Partnerships", next choose the type of certificate you would like and then complete the online form.
- By post (enclosing payment) to;

Cost and Payment
The cost of certificates bought within 1 month of registration is £10. For all other extracts the cost is £15.
Cheques should be made payable to East Lothian Council.
All payments outwith the United Kingdom should be in sterling in the form of an international money order or banker’s draft.
Same day service
If you would like to take advantage of our 'same day' service please contact either the Haddington office (telephone 01620 827308/7778) or the Musselburgh office (telephone 0131 653 5225/5226). The cost of this service is £5 per extract (in addition to the statutory fee above).
For an extract to be available on the same day, a request must be made by 3.30pm (Monday-Thursday) or by 2.30pm (Friday).
