Register a birth

You can choose to make an appointment to register the birth in our office or you can register the birth over the phone. The law allows a birth to be registered in any registration district in Scotland.

If you choose to register the birth in our office you get the birth certificate at the appointment. If you register the birth over the phone we will post the birth certificate to you at a later date.

All births registrations are by appointment only

Helpful documents to have at your appointment

• the card issued by the hospital
• the parents' birth certificates
• the parents' marriage or civil partnership certificate - if applicable
