Instrumental Music Service

How to register, fees, FAQ's and upcoming performances.

East Lothian Instrumental Music Service currently employs 20 highly qualified Instrumental Instructors and provides Instrumental tuition to pupils in both primary and secondary schools across the authority. Pupils are offered the opportunity to learn brass, woodwind, strings, percussion, piano, guitar and pipes with our experienced and inspiring Instructors. All our instructors are fully PVG checked and carry out regular safeguarding training.

String tuition may start at Primary 5 and percussion at Secondary 1. All other tuition is offered from Primary 6 onwards. Please note that due to the specialisms of the Instrumental Instructors not all instruments are available in all primary schools. We can provide an instrument to loan, free of charge, for the duration of a pupil’s learning with us.

The Instrumental Music Service also facilitates a range of collaborative and performance opportunities at both local and national levels. Our external partners include the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, Edinburgh Youth Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, the Benedetti Foundation, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the Lammermuir Festival, and the Maxwell Quartet.

The service aims to:

  • provide equal opportunities of access for all pupils to experience the expressive and creative qualities of music through learning to play an instrument
  • to help as many pupils as possible to realise their full musical potential through the playing of an instrument
