Film premiere
Young carers aged between 9 and 17 have created a new film to support schools, other services and the wider community to understand the role that they play and how best to support them. The Young Carers Advisory Group applied to the East Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership and Youth Lead Fund for financial backing to undertake the project.
The group explained that they were motivated to create the film “so everyone is aware of Young Carers”, “everyone needs to know that we always care” and “it gave me the opportunity to work with some great people to make a great change.”
Practical, emotional and medical care
The film includes young carers talking about the practical, emotional and medical care they provide, opportunities and challenges they face, the impact this can have on their education and what they would like schools and other services working with children to do to support them. It is a mixture of live interviews and animations planned and created by the young people who also composed and recorded some of the background music.
Labour of love
Cabinet member for Education and Children’s and Family Services Councillor Fiona Dugdale said: “Creating this film has clearly been a labour of love for our young carers and a powerful way for them to highlight the importance and challenges of their role. The film will not only raise awareness, but it will also call on us all to consider what more we can do to support our young carers so they can balance their responsibilities with their own interests and ambitions. I’m looking forward to the premiere and meeting the young carers who have been involved.”
The Young Carers Film Premiere takes place on 11 June 2026 4.30pm-5.30pm at the Fraser Centre Cinema, Tranent. Four young carers will introduce the event and there will be time for light refreshments and opportunity to meet all those involved.
