Duration

Personal licenses last for 10 years and you must renew your licence at least 3 months before the date on which it expires. 

Application

In order to apply for a licence, there are four requirements.  The applicant must:

• be an individual aged 18 years or over
• hold an approved training certificate
• lodge certified passport photos
• pay the fee

The application form must be accompanied by:

• a copy of the training certificate
• 2 passport photographs (35mm x 45mm), one of which must be signed by a person of standing in the community.  E.g. I certify that this is a true likeness of (name of applicant) and the name of the person certifying the photograph.

The application will be circulated to Police Scotland and the Licensing Standards Officer (LSO) for comment.  The licence can be granted by delegated authority if there are no adverse reports.  If adverse reports are received, the application will be considered by the Licensing Board.

Training

You are required to undertake ‘refresher’ training every five years after the issued of the licence.  This is a condition of the licence and the training certificate must be lodged with the licensing authority no later than three months after the five-year anniversary.  If either of these dates are missed, the licence will be revoked.

If the personal licence holder is a designated premises manager and their personal licence lapses, that person can no longer hold the position of premises manager.

The local authority does not provide the required training.  Qualifications must be awarded by an accredited training provider.

The fee for a personal licence is £50.
