East Lothian Council provides social housing which is usually more affordable and secure than renting from private landlord. These pages tell you what you need to do to apply for council housing in East Lothian.
There are a lot of people looking for council housing in East Lothian and the demand is greater than the number of properties we have becoming available. We can only allocate housing to the people and households that are in the most housing need.
You should consider what other housing options may be available to you. To help with this we offer Housing Options interviews, where we can look at your circumstances and discuss the choices you have available to you.
If you are aged 16 years or older you can still apply for council housing. These pages will guide you through the application process.
As a first step you can find out who is eligible for council housing in East Lothian. Other pages describe how to apply, and show what kinds of Council properties we have, in which areas. You can also learn how we prioritise our allocations..
If your circumstances change, after you have applied, or if you want to change your application, it is important that you let us know.
In some circumstances people can be suspended from our housing list and if you think you have been treated unfairly because of this, or for any other reason, you can appeal the Housing Service's decisions.
