SCRAN

Scran is no longer available following the launch of trove.scot in February 2025.

Trove.scot is a new e-resource bringing together Historic Environment Scotland’s diverse collections in one convenient place. It combines information from the Historic Environment Portal, Canmore, as well as images previously on SCRAN.

Items will be transferred to Trove.scot and the first batch of over 50,000 items has already been transferred and is available to view, with the full transfer to be completed by March 2026. Unfortunately, there will be a gap from June 2025 to March 2026 when up to 200,000 items will not be available to access online

Unlike scran.ac.uk, Trove.scot does not require a user account to browse. User accounts will therefore not be transferred. These will be effectively closed when the site is switched off. User account information will be retained in line with HES’ data retention policy as outlined in the Scran privacy notice.

Trove.scot will not have the same functionality as scran.ac.uk. This means you should save local copies of any resources you have created as you will not be able to download them once the website is switched off.

You can use much of the material on Trove.scot for personal or educational purposes in a similar way to how you currently use Scran. More information can be found here - https://www.trove.scot/licensing/
