You need to make an appointment with a Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages to register the birth of your baby. You have 21 days to do this.

Making an appointment

All Births Registrations are by appointment only.

Appointments can be made in either Haddington, John Muir House, Musselburgh, Brunton Hall or Dunbar, Bleachingfield Centre.

Note: The law allows a birth to be registered in any registration district in Scotland.

Documents to bring

You should take with you:

  • the card issued by the hospital
  • parents' birth certificates
  • marriage or civil partnership certificate of the child's parents if applicable
