Social Distance Guidance for Businesses

Social distancing guidance for businesses in Scotland has been updated to help provide clarity on protecting employees in the fight against Coronavirus (COVID-19).  It provides further information for employers and makes clear that those providing essential services must follow social distancing requirements.

If you own a business or operate a workplace that is not required to close by law you must consider:

  1.  Is what you do essential to the efforts in the fight against the virus or benefits the wellbeing of society?
  2. Can you demonstrate and provide your workforce with reassurance that they are consistently practising safe social distancing and complying with all other standard health and safety requirements?

If the answer to either of these questions is no, workplaces are advised to close.

Business with enquiries about whether or not they can continue to operate can email ehts@eastlothian.gov.uk

Town centre businesses

  • businesses are encouraged to operate appointment systems to minimise the number of people congregating at their premises
  • pavements should be kept clear for use by people living and working in town centres who need access to their properties, people waiting for buses and taxis, as well as customers of shops
  • advertising boards and merchandise on the pavements, and items which are reducing space for social distancing will have to be removed
  • remember that many of the people who will be out and about may use wheelchairs, have other mobility limitations, or be partially-sighted

We all need to work together to ensure that everyone is accommodated as far as possible.

Please email spacesforpeople@eastlothian.gov.uk with queries about the use of outdoor public space.
