Arrangements are now being made to admit pupils to the first year of secondary school for the academic year starting in August 2020.

Parents and carers of P7 pupils attending East Lothian Council primary schools will have received a letter posted to the home address regarding their child’s transfer to secondary school. No further action is normally required if the family wishes their child to attend the catchment secondary school.

Parents/carers should contact the council's education business unit if:

  • They have not received their letter by 1 December 2019
  • They live in East Lothian and have a child who does not attend one of the council’s primary schools but wish their child to attend the catchment secondary school.

It’s important that families keep the education service up to date with any changes in their residence until their child starts secondary school in August 2020. A place awarded to a pupil based on an old address may be withdrawn.

Although most children will attend their catchment school, under the Education (Scotland) Act 1980 parents can request that their child attends a different school. This is known as a non-catchment placing request. Non-catchment placing request application forms are now available from all East Lothian Council primary schools, online and from the education business unit.

Pupils attending primary school outwith East Lothian can also apply to an East Lothian secondary school using this process. Non-catchment placing requests should be made by 24 December 2019 to the Education Business Unit. Any requests placed after this date will be considered but an early application is advisable.

Questions or information on particular secondary schools should be directed to the individual school’s office.

A booklet with information on the transfer to secondary school and making a non-catchment placing request is available to download.
