A message from Anne Neilson, Chair of East and Midlothian Public Protection Committee

Saturday 20 February 2021 is National Adult Support and Protection Day. East and Midlothian Public Protection Office is using the day to focus on sexual harm.

On Adult Support and Protection Day, and all the other days, please DO NOT put up with sexual abuse. It’s really important to make it stop.

Anne Neilson, EMPPO Chair

East and Midlothian Public Protection Committee Chair Anne Neilson said:

‘Sexual harm affects many adults. Even more so just now, during lockdown.

‘It can take many forms including online, inappropriate touching or exposure to sexual images and goes right through to rape. The abuser is often someone in the person’s immediate circle of acquaintance – family members, “friends” and sometimes even people employed to provide the person with support.

‘Our message is, “We are here to help and support you!” No one has to put up with sexual abuse. And there are plenty of people who can help. Talk to someone you trust or speak to the police, your worker or Rape Crisis Centre Scotland.

‘I am also asking if you are worried about someone and think they are at risk of sexual harm, please report your concerns to police or social work. That person really needs your help and your intervention could make a huge and positive difference.

‘So, on Adult Support and Protection Day, and all the other days, please DO NOT put up with sexual abuse. It’s really important to make it stop.’
