East Lothian Health and Social Care spokesperson shares message of support on International Women's Day 2021
"International Women’s Day is so important. Only by constantly challenging disparity will things ever change."
Today is International Women's Day (8 March 2021). It's a global day of celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Hundreds of thousands of groups come together worldwide to celebrate women's achievements or rally for women's equality.
East Lothian Health and Social Care spokesperson Councillor Shamin Akhtar said:
"The campaign theme for International Women's Day 2021 is 'Choose to Challenge'.
"Although there has been progress over the last 100 years, in terms of voting and equality legislation, there is still a long way to go until we see true gender parity. According to the World Economic Forum, at this rate we will not achieve true gender parity for almost a century to come.
"That’s why International Women’s Day is so important. Only by constantly challenging disparity will things ever change.
"I endorse that message and will be doing my bit on International Women’s Day and every other day to challenge inequality wherever I see it."
