Environmental Health warning following confirmation of seasonal blue-green algae

Recent water samples taken at Pressmennan Lake near Stenton have indicated the presence of blue-green algae. As a precautionary measure, notices have been posted at the site, warning that contact with the algal scum should be avoided.

This body of water has recently been enjoyed by paddle boarders and wild swimmers who are being advised that bathing and contact with the water should be avoided at this time. Also people using the paths around the lake should not let their dogs enter the water as the algae species identified can be fatal to animals.

Adjoining landowners have also been advised of the situation by East Lothian Council's Environmental Health team as have SEPA and NHS.

At this stage there is no adverse effect on water supplies.
