The inaugural East Lothian Council Young Musician of the Year 2022 will take place in the stunning St Mary’s Church, Haddington, on Saturday 2 April.

Sixteen talented young soloists will perform a five minute programme in the afternoon to a panel of judges before around ten are invited to perform their full eight minute programme in the evening Gala Concert to an audience of parents, family members and music lovers.The winner will then go on to represent East Lothian, in the national Scottish Young Musicians Solo Performer of the Year, at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on the 29 May.

The evening gala concert will also feature a performance from East Lothian’s newly formed senior brass ensemble which brings together nine of the top brass players from across the county's six secondary schools. They will be performing and recording their submission for the Scottish Young Musician’s Brass Competition as part of this event.

The panel of judges for the day will be led by Christine McGinley who will be joined by Jonathan Gawn. An extremely experienced judge and talented musician, Christine is currently Sub-Principal horn with the Scottish Ballet Orchestra and teaches as a horn specialist and brass instructor across a number of schools and colleges including the University of St Andrews. Jonathan Gawn is East Lothian Council’s Instrumental Music Service Team Manager and has been Principal Tuba with the Scottish Ballet Orchestra since 2008 and is also currently the low brass coach for the National Youth Concert Band of Great Britain. 

Jonathan said: “We are very excited to be able to offer this performance opportunity to our talented young musicians and have been delighted to see so many of them enter. St Mary’s is a beautiful building and with this being our first live public performance since the pandemic, I personally can’t wait to hear our young people perform in this stunning acoustic setting.”

The evening Gala Concert will start at 7pm and will be open to the public. Seats can be reserved online..
