East Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership is delighted to be participating in Scottish Learning Disability Week 2023, which runs from May 1 to May 7.  This awareness week aims to celebrate the rich contributions that people with learning disabilities make to society, as well as working to ensure people receive full and fair access to all of their rights.

This year’s theme is ‘Lead to Change’ which aims to raise awareness about how people with learning disabilities are leaders; be that in their own life, as part of a group, in sports and activities, in the community, and as a leader of change.

As part of the campaign, East Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership will be sharing daily resources on its social media channels.  These resources will provide information and links to the support and services available for people with learning disabilities within East Lothian.  We’ll also be sharing personal stories from individuals and colleagues within the learning disability team.

On Thursday May 4, our social media posts will include a link to NHS’s Rainbow Yoga; a fun way for everyone to enjoy physical activity, mindfulness and relaxation.   Yoga has been shown to not only improve coordination and balance but to have numerous benefits for people with learning disabilities, including reducing anxiety and improving mood, increasing body awareness and sensory integration, and promoting social interaction and communication.

You can find East Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership on Facebook and Instagram using the tag @ELHSCP.   But if you simply can’t wait, visit our website at www.eastlothian.gov.uk/elhscp/learning-disability and view our dedicated Learning Disability Support section where you will find information on the range of services and programs available in East Lothian including our Shared Lives Scheme, Transition Programme, information and support for Carers, as well as how to gain access to Independent Advocacy.

East Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership is committed to providing a person-centred and inclusive environment that respects the rights and dignity of all.  We aim to provide the assistance and support to allow people with learning disabilities to live their best lives - at home and within the community.
