Parents and carers across East Lothian have been warned not to park illegally or inconsiderately near schools in the county.

Road safety concerns created by inappropriate parking were highlighted in emails sent out by schools this week.

The messages reminded parents and carers that they could also face prosecution if they flout parking restrictions.

The reminders identified several areas around school buildings where vehicles should not be parked, including near the entrance and on ‘School Keep Clear’ yellow zigzag lines.

Road safety danger

There should be no parking on single yellow lines when a restriction is in place, on double yellow lines, or where it will affect visibility or make it difficult for others to walk or cross the road.

Parking is not permitted anywhere where a School Street is in operation in Haddington and Dunbar, or on footways, pavements, and verges.

An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: “Congestion caused by inconsiderate and inappropriate parking can present a road safety danger at school travel times.

“The journey to school needs to be as same as possible and we all need to work together to make that happen.”
