Works to reduce the impact of flooding at the Ormiston Park Play Area will begin today (Tuesday, 1 April).

For several years, the play area has been impacted by areas of flooding which often left it unusable for children.

Water run-off from fields and surface rainwater can back up around the equipment due to the ground levels.

These works will improve the dispersal of any flooding more efficiently back to the Tyne Water and help reduce any long-term standing water in the park.

In addition, the play area will be topped up with fresh batches of woodchip.

It is hoped the flood works will be completed by 19 April, depending on the weather.

Essential works

Although the toddler area at the top of the park will remain open for use, the remainder of the play area will be closed for safety reasons whilst works are undertaken.

Preliminary work began at the park yesterday to fence off the work site.

An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: “The Friends of Ormiston Park group have been kept aware of this project.

“We apologise for any short-term disruption to regular use. Normally we would try to avoid such works in a play area during the Easter period, but these improvements had to be scheduled when operational capacity and improving weather conditions would allow for their completion.

“These essential works will reduce the risk of flooding in the park and ensure fewer play days are lost in the future.”
