Road resurfacing work began today (Wednesday, 11 June) on the High Street in East Linton.
The carriageway improvements for High Street and Bridge Street are scheduled to take approximately three weeks to complete, weather permitting.
A legal order is in place to close the High Street to vehicular traffic for the safety of both the public and East Lothian Council employees but, despite clear signage and barriers, a high level of non-compliance by motorists has been reported.
A council spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, we are experiencing large numbers of vehicles driving through the barriers. This is not only illegal but also puts our operatives at risk.
“Motorists must follow the signed diversion route which is in place. Anyone who fails to comply with the road closure order will be reported to the police.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the carriageway improvement programme and appreciate the public’s cooperation during these essential works.”
Signed diversion in place
The works are being carried out in phases to minimise disruption with the first section to be resurfaced between Preston Road and No. 43 High Street. The second phase will be between No. 43 High Street and The Square to be followed by a third section from The Square to Station Road.
Letters have previously been sent to all properties directly impacted by the works.
Vehicular access for residents and businesses will be maintained outside working hours (8am to 4:30pm Monday to Thursday and 8am to 1pm on Friday) and at weekends where practicable. Anyone who requires the use of their vehicle during working hours should park outside the extent of the works.
Emergency service vehicle will always have access and refuse and recycling collections will be undertaken before 8:30am where practical. Residents are asked to ensure bins/boxes are out by 7am on collection days.
