Residents are being asked to share first-hand knowledge, experience or observations to help the Council develop plans to manage the potential future impacts of coastal erosion and other challenges.
The first phase of a project to develop a Coastal Change Adaptation Plan (CCAP) is currently being carried out.
The CCAP aims to address future challenges presented by coastal erosion, flooding, rising sea levels and the overtopping of waves.
This first phase includes a ‘call for information’, in which local residents and stakeholders are invited to share their knowledge and any lived experience. This involves the Council collecting data to assist in building a greater understanding of the risks faced along East Lothian’s coast.
It is expected that the second phase, planned to start in early 2026, will use this information alongside scientific and other data obtained during phase 1 to develop proposed long-term actions and strategies to adapt and manage East Lothian’s coastline in the context of a changing climate. The second phase will include wider engagement, including public events.
Planning and resilience
Tom Reid, East Lothian Council’s Head of Infrastructure, said: “While we have a very good overall understanding of East Lothian’s coastline, we’re keen to hear from local residents and members of the community who may have observed localised changes or differences, whether it is recorded in pictures, documents or anecdotal information they may be able to share. This insight can help us to develop a long-term strategy which guides how East Lothian manages its coastline, protects communities and builds resilience into future planning and resilience.”
Members of the public and stakeholders can contribute information between Monday, 14 July and Tuesday, 2 September 2025 online at: https://eastlothianconsultations.co.uk/infrastructure/ccap-call-for-evidence/ or https://climatereadyses.commonplace.is/en-GB/map/climate-ready-south-east-scotland-story-map
