Earlier today, Tuesday 2 September, the National Records of Scotland published their annual statistical report on drug related deaths for 2024.
In 2024, there were 1,017 drug misuse deaths registered in Scotland, a decrease of 13% (155 deaths) compared with 2023.[1] For East Lothian, a total of 21 deaths were recorded. Each one of these deaths represents a tragic loss of life, and our condolences go out to the families and friends involved.
Reaching people involved with drug use can be challenging, as they often lead isolated lives and face a number of related issues such as poor physical and mental health, poverty, deprivation. This is only compounded by the accessibility and availability of illicit drugs in our communities.
Nevertheless, staff across East Lothian work tirelessly to address substance use harm, and support individuals through their recovery journey offering access to services and a choice of treatment and support.
The efforts of the team have been verified through the successful implementation of the national Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Standards. Without this important work deaths may well have been higher.
Midlothian and East Lothian Drugs and Alcohol Partnership (MELDAP) treatment services provide rapid access into treatment for people who use alcohol and drugs.
Members of our communities are encouraged to support and assist those affected by their, or others drug and/or alcohol use, to use the services that are in place to offer treatment and support into recovery.
If you, or someone you know needs help, please contact the MELD Contact Service on 07843 339 958. The Contact Service hours are 9am – 9pm Monday the Friday with a 24-hour message text service available at other times.
