A special ceremony was held last week (1 October) in Haddington to welcome East Lothian’s newest British citizens.
- Provost and Lord Lieutenant welcome newest citizens
- Attendees presented with their Certificate of Naturalisation
- Varied skills and experiences contribute to varied and vibrant local communities
Around six citizenship ceremonies are held each year in East Lothian for people who have successfully applied to become a British citizen. They are invited to a local ceremony where they swear an oath or affirmation of allegiance to the Sovereign and make a formal, public pledge before being presented with their certificate of naturalisation by the Lord-Lieutenant.
The nine attendees originally hailed from Poland, Vietnam, Pakistan, and India among other countries and have settled across the county.
Real cause for celebration
They and their guests were welcomed to the event by East Lothian Provost Councillor John McMillan, who said: “It is always a pleasure to attend the citizenship ceremonies and to speak to people about the paths that have brought them here. It’s a solemn yet joyous occasion and a real cause for celebration.
“The events are a microcosm of East Lothian: different nationalities, religions and ethnicities coming together, contributing to our vibrant and varied communities. Each person comes here with his or own unique character and experiences, and influences this country as this country, with its long political, social and cultural traditions, influences each one of us.
“At a time when there is so much discord and division, it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the things that connect us. I am delighted that they have chosen to settle in East Lothian and appreciate the opportunity to congratulate our newest citizens.”
King's representative
Lord-Lieutenant Roderick Urquhart, the King’s representative in East Lothian said: “I always greatly appreciate taking part in the very special citizenship ceremonies that take place every two months in Haddington. The recent ceremony held last week was another memorable event.
"Witnessing people being admitted as new citizens of the United Kingdom and congratulating them, while also being able to chat with them afterwards about their own individual journeys from all corners of the globe, is always enlightening and interesting.”
