Families across East Lothian can benefit from a new scheme which provides free loans of electric ‘cargo bikes’.
The council is working in partnership with Sustaining North Berwick, Sustaining Dunbar, and Cycling UK on the project to help more people try out an alternative mode of transport for everyday journeys.
The bikes have space to carry up to two young children and one adult rider and are designed to support sustainable transport and reduce car dependency. Featuring electric batteries to make cycling with a heavy load easier, especially up hills and over longer distances, they are cheaper to run than a car.
Cameron Maxwell, from North Berwick, has found the bike a “vital support” in managing his mental health. He said: “The cargo bike has made a huge difference in my daily life. It has allowed me to take my kids to school and nursery, do shopping trips, and most importantly, visit people when I need support.
“Having access to the cargo bike for free has been incredible.”
The zero emissions bikes can be accessed by county residents for a free four-week loan. If loanees are interested, the council’s Active Travel Team and its partners can then offer advice on how to purchase an appropriately priced bike and how to spread the cost.
Improved health
Councillor John McMillan, East Lothian Council’s Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment, Economic Development and Tourism, said: “The bikes are perfect for the school run and other everyday trips, providing a clean, fun and practical alternative to car journeys.
“By removing the financial and logistical barriers to access, East Lothian Council and its partners are helping people experience the benefits of cargo bikes which includes improved health and reducing your carbon footprint.”
Mark James, from Sustaining Dunbar, said: “The participants are hugely grateful for the opportunity to try out a family cargo bike. Not only is it fun for all involved, it has shown what is possible.
“From Sustaining Dunbar’s perspective, cargo bike loans are another opportunity for people to get involved with the group and discover the wide reach of our various projects.”
Anyone interested in finding out more about the scheme or wishing to request a bike can email activetravel@eastlothian.gov.uk. The council’s Active Travel Team will refer applicants to the appropriate partner organisation for a taster session/free training and the arrangement of a bike loan.
