Schools and council services will remain open in East Lothian on Monday 15 June following a decision taken at East Lothian Council meeting yesterday (24 February 2026).
A paper was brought before elected members on the potential implementation in the county of a National Bank Holiday to mark Scotland’s participation in the Men’s World Cup Finals.
The paper noted the considerable cost to the council with the previous public holiday for HM The King’s Coronation estimated at £150,000.
Councillors unanimously agreed with officers’ proposals that no additional public holiday or additional annual leave day should be granted.
All schools and council services will remain open.
East Lothian Council Leader Norman Hampshire said: “While we are all excited to watch Scotland take part in the World Cup, the cost to our council is too great to observe a national bank holiday in East Lothian. Elected members unanimously agreed that we cannot justify the costs involved in our current financial environment.”
The Scottish Government announced its intention to designate Monday 15 June as a national bank holiday with the Royal Proclamation approved by His Majesty King Charles on 4 February.
