Water pollution

In East Lothian 11 beaches are currently sampled for bathing water quality by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA).

They include Dunbar, Gullane, Longniddry, North Berwick, Seacliff, Seton Sands, Thorntonloch, Whitesands and Yellowcraig.

Samples are taken by SEPA during the summer months from June to September and the results shared with the Council. Further information on bathing water quality can be found here, including the result classification for each beach.

We works alongside SEPA and distribute signage to each of the designated bathing water locations advising of last season’s designation. This is done at the start of each bathing water season where there is no electronic sign in place.

We also works with SEPA and other partner agencies where there has been a sample failure. Advice against bathing signs are posted at key locations as required and communications issued on social media platforms and through the Council’s Communications Team.
