Environmental protection

The Environmental Protection Team provides both statutory and non-statutory functions and where necessary use regulatory powers. We have a wide ranging remit which focuses on protecting human and animal health as well as the built and natural environment.  

The majority of our work relates to nuisance investigations, contaminated land, radiation and radon monitoring, local air quality management, private water supplies, assisted funerals, housing conditions/standards, immigration housing inspections and reports, housing/common repairs, licensing consultations, blue/green algae, bathing waters and assisting with pollution/chemical/hazardous material incidents

Statutory nuisance

Sometimes people have problems at home because something nearby is making life unpleasant — like loud noise, bad smells, or pests. 

When a problem is really affecting someone’s life in a serious way, the law calls it a statutory nuisance.

Contaminated land

In order to tackle the legacy of historically contaminated land, legislation requires the council to inspect its area, from time to time, for areas of potentially contaminated land.

Radiation and radon monitoring

In addition to air quality monitoring, radiation monitors have recently been installed at appropriate locations within the Council area.

Private water supply

Private water supplies are those which are not provided by Scottish Water . Private water supplies are likely to be from springs, wells and boreholes. Here in East Lothian we have some 50 private supplies most of which are located at the foot of the Lammermuirs.

Immigration housing inspections and letters

If you require to bring an individual or individuals to live in the UK from outside Europe, an Immigration Letter is required.  The Council’s Environmental Protection Team can assist with this.

Pest Control Rats - Bird feeding

Bird feeding and rats:

A high percentage of rat infestations are due to bird feeding, you should not feed birds during the summer months.
