Burial services and memorials

If the lair holder has sadly passed away, we recognise that this may be a very emotional and difficult time for you and your family. To help us keep our records accurate and ensure everything is handled with care, a Declaration of Transfer of Right of Burial will need to be completed.

Once the transfer is in place, the new lair holder will be able to:

• arrange any future interments
• install a headstone
• arrange any work to an existing headstone
   

Transferring the Right of Burial

We aim to make this process as simple and supportive as possible. A lair can be transferred when:

• the East Lothian Council Declaration for Transfer of Right of Burial form has been completed and signed by a public notary
• the completed form has been submitted to the Bereavement Team
• payment has been made
   

The Declaration of Transfer of Right of Burial form is a legal document. By signing it, the applicant taking ownership of the lair confirms that they have gained agreement from any other individuals who may have rights to the lair under the line of succession.
