Joint Investigative Interview

The following pages provide information on what to expect if a child or young person you know is taking part in a Joint Investigative Interview. If you or the child would like to speak to a member of the Interview Team to find out more, please contact Duty Social Work on 01620 827 827.

Interview Venue and Support

A suitable date, time and venue for the interview will be agreed with the child and their support person.

It is important that a supportive adult is identified to come with the child or young person to the interview. This person has a valuable role to play in offering comfort, familiarity, and reassurance before and after the interview, as well as during breaks.

Interviewers will have at least one break during the interview to consult their notes, however the child can request as many breaks as they need to help them manage the process.

The Sycamore Centre

Interviews are mainly carried out at The Sycamore Centre, Edinburgh. This is a purpose built venue which provides a private, child friendly environment for these interviews to take place. A selection of refreshments and fidget toys/games/drawing are provided which can help the child concentrate and feel more at ease during the interview. They can also bring their own comfort items if they wish.

A video showing The Sycamore Centre can be shared with the child before the interview, making them more familiar with the interview rooms before they arrive.

Follow Up Support

We recognise that taking part in a Joint Investigative Interview can be a difficult experience for everyone involved. Interviewers can explore what support the child and their family may require and provide them information on suitable services.

See Follow Up Support for more details.
