Battlefields

The Inventory of Historic Battlefields is a list of nationally important battlefields in Scotland, compiled by Historic Environment Scotland on behalf of Scottish Ministers.

East Lothian contains four sites on the national inventory:

  • Battle of Dunbar I (27 April 1296)
  • Battle of Pinkie (10 September 1547)
  • Battle of Dunbar II (3 September 1650)
  • Battle of Prestonpans (21 September 1745)

The Council will take these designated sites into account when preparing the local development plan and when considering development proposals.  In certain circumstances Historic Environment Scotland will be consulted on planning applications affecting battlefields on the national inventory.

Detailed information on the Inventory of Historic Battlefields and the sites included within it can be found on Historic Environment Scotland's website.
