Archaeology

East Lothian has a large number of archaeological sites. These include around 300 Scheduled Monuments which are nationally important and have statutory protection, as well as several thousand sites of regional or local importance. Archaeological sites are a 'material consideration' in the planning process.

East Lothian Council Archaeology Service provides information and advice to the Planning Service, developers and archaeological contractors.

For further information on the Archaeology Service, archaeology and development, Historic Environment Record (HER), local events and how you can get involved, please visit our Archaeology homepage.
