Conservation Areas, listed buildings, gardens and designed landscapes, archaeology and battlefields
The 'Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland' is compiled by Historic Environment Scotland on behalf of Scottish Ministers, and includes designed or ornamental landscapes such as private gardens, public parks, the policies of country estates, and botanical gardens.
East Lothian has nearly 30 sites that are included on the Inventory (mainly country estate policies designed in the 18th and 19th centuries) including Lennoxlove, Newhailes, Tyninghame, and Yester House. These areas are to be protected from harmful development, and the council is required to consult Historic Scotland on development affecting a site on the Inventory.
More information on Gardens and Designed Landscapes can be found within the adopted Local Development Plan 2018.
Detailed information on the Inventory of Gardens & Designed Landscapes and all the sites included can be found on Historic Environment Scotland's website.
