Evicting a tenant - your duty to notify

Your responsibility for notifying the council if you are evicting your tenant

The law requires you to serve a notice to the local authority if you are starting possession action. This only applies if you are using court action to recover possession of the property – for example on the grounds of rent arrears. It does not apply if the tenancy is coming to its natural conclusion and you have decided not to renew it – for example you have served a notice to quit to bring a short assured tenancy to an end, and the tenant leaves at the end of the fixed period.
