North Berwick High Street

North Berwick High Street is a busy shopping area and tourist attraction. The high level of footfall combined with narrow footpaths and the increase in vehicle traffic has resulted in many different issues which have been highlighted to East Lothian Council over the years. East Lothian Council has looked at different options to improve pedestrian access as well as road safety and traffic congestion.

North Berwick High Street after pavement widening works complete

Following extensive engagement and consultation with residents, businesses and community groups over many years, the council sought to enhance the High Street while delivering wider improvements to the area to increase safety and accessibility. This has been achieved through widening footpaths and prohibiting parking from the junction at Quality Street to the junction at Market Street. To support local business and blue badge holders there are a number loading bays in place as well. To reduce the impact on the High Street, construction was undertaken in two phases . Council officers provided regular updates throughout the process and met with local groups and individual business owners to ensure everyone was clear on plans and timescales. The project has used materials in keeping with the historical feel of the High Street and complemented existing street furniture including benches and planters.

Following the completion of the project in April 2025 ELC has received many positive comments over the work and layout. Council officers continue to monitor the parking restrictions and loadings bays which have been introduced on a temporary basis through an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO). As well as allowing the improvements to be assessed in practice, the ETRO gives the public, business owners, and community groups the opportunity to provide feedback as they experience them on the ground.
