Cockenzie Harbour was built in the early 17th century by the Earl of Winton and became a hub for coal exportation and salt extraction, as well as fishing and whaling.
In the 1790's there were 11 saltpans within the area which were inextricable linked with coalmining in the area.
Fishing was a huge industry and by the First World War there more than 650 fisherman and 150 registered boats in Cockenzie and Port Seton.
The harbour was largely destroyed by a storm in the mid 17th century and reconstructed in the 1830s for coal exportation and continued fishing.
Fishing remains an important industry to Cockenzie and Port Seton's community, with continued presence of fish merchants and curers in the area.
